Information technology has been evolving greatly in the global business space in the last few decades. As a supporting system of the business, information technology infrastructure plays a key role in its success and gives companies a competitive edge. Today information is considered to be one of the major assets of companies of all scales. Managing the infrastructure that handles information turns out to be challenging to companies, especially in a technology environment that is rapidly changing. What are the current trends in IT that is of concern to infrastructure managers? How is the future of IT infrastructure management going to be? Here are some possible answers to these questions.
The Age of Cloud Computing
With technological innovation, the productivity and cost effectiveness of IT infrastructure has improved. Managing data in large enterprises once upon a time was a tedious task and required large amount of resources. Today, technologies like cloud have made it easier for companies to handle information effectively. Cloud technology reduces the cost and energy consumption and gives a reliable and scalable solution for needs of companies. This has led to introduction of business models such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) where the service providers use the principle of cloud to create virtual resources for enterprise use from an offsite location.
IT Infrastructure Management – Future Challenges and Demands
The developments in the field of cloud technology and big data no doubt increase the efficiency but also pose serious challenges, some of which can be very expensive to the organizations.
Information Security Concerns
Security of information is one of the major concerns in IT infrastructure management since the technological landscape is advancing at a rapid pace with introduction of new wireless devices. Today there may be more than one type of device used to access business information through internet from a remote server/datacentre. The type of devices and the internet network through which information can be accessed poses threat to it. IT professionals are concerned about creating models that ensure complete safety to business data.
Predictive Systems
With the new model of SaaS, IaaS or Paas in place, predictive systems which analyse past data to indicate steps that need to be taken to manage IT infrastructure will be in great demand in future. This type of system will considerably reduce downtimes and hence improve productivity of the IT infrastructure.
Automation
In a March, 2016 conference held in San Francisco, Google announced the probable path cloud technology in future. One of the important aspects mentioned here was related to machine learning where in the system is capable of analysing data and providing valuable information based on the findings. Smart machines work in a similar way but are programmed to take decisions without need for human intervention. The IT cloud infrastructure of future will be capable of assessing the space required and make necessary decisions automatically. This form of automation in infrastructure management systems will reduce time and energy and will play a key role in success of enterprises and service providing companies in the years to come.
