It’s time to make the most serious decision of your life! Some people worry that with arts as their stream in class 12, they do not have many choices for a lucrative career. However, that is not true, at all. There are options galore, both conventional and unconventional.
One can opt for the traditional degree programs such as BA (Bachelor’s of Arts) where one can study subjects such as History, English, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Hindi, Political Science, and so on. BA (Honors) is an added advantage. A graduation degree is a must for most jobs and to appear for exams such as civil services and banks.
One can also go for B.Com (Bachelor’s of Commerce) if there is interest in the commerce field and later opt to be trained as a CA (Chartered Accountant) or CS (Company Secretary).
BBA (Bachelor’s of Business Administration) or BMS (Bachelor’s of Management Studies) are also viable options, if there is an inclination toward business management.
There is also the alternative of a career in fine arts by doing BFA or Bachelor’s of Fine Arts.
For those with a creative bent of mind, several other options are available. There is the field of fashion design which has massive scope in today’s extremely fashion-conscious India. With online shopping becoming a rage, constant evolution of new fashion brands each day can be seen. NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) conducts an all India entrance test for which students can appear after passing 12th standard.
For the artistically inclined again, NID (National Institute of Design) holds an entrance exam at all India level for those with 10+2 education. At NID, one can pursue Textile, Industrial, IT and Communication design.
Hospitality Management is another booming arena for those from the arts stream. Both diploma and degree programs are available. The NCHMCT (National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology) Entrance Exam is held at the All India level. With growing passion for travel and tourism, this industry has unveiled a host of exciting job opportunities. But one needs to be prepared for irregular timings and must possess an extroverted personality.
Mass Communication too offers ample opportunities. Along with print and electronic media, now there are ever increasing opportunities in online media, as well. However, one needs to possess a bold and adventurous streak and be able to take on a high level of pressure if one opts for journalism. Mass Communication also includes Advertising and Public Relations. These too are interesting options with much scope if one likes to interact with people.
Another great option is the field of law. CLAT (Common Law Admission Test ) is an all India level exam for LLB ( Bachelor’s of Law) conducted by 14 prestigious National Law Universities.
Graphic Design and animation are two other fields that present many opportunities for the creative minded.
Last but not the least, for those who wish to serve the nation and protect its borders, there is the NDA (National Defense Academy). The examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Those from the arts stream can take the exam for the Army wing of the Defense Services. However, girls are not eligible for this exam.
There are so many other options such as airlines staff or beauticians, in event management or in the field of languages. One can also go for unconventional choices like an acting program or dance training or even a program to develop entrepreneurial skills. The list is long and the scope wide. A judicious choice will, no doubt, lead to success in life.
