Project management methodologies have been around for several decades now, but more recently there have been many innovations to suit the needs of the modern industries. Since project management is required everywhere today, from the construction of buildings to developing software products and launching marketing campaigns, there is a demand for project managers around the world. Project management training can take professionals to new heights in their careers by equipping them with the right set of skills and knowledge.
There are many types of project management training in the market. In this write-up, we are considering PRINCE2® and Project Management training to understand the differences between the two. We also try to find out how to choose between PRINCE2® and Project Management certification.
PRINCE2® is one of the project management methodologies. PRINCE stands for Projects in Controlled Environment. It has a set of principles, themes and processes which are well-defined. They are in place to answer the what, how and why of a project. A professional who takes up PRINCE2® training will get into project management with a process-based approach. Though mostly used in the technical field, the certification can help professionals from all domains.
Project Management training and PRINCE2® help professionals equip themselves to become project managers. Though there are similarities with the content of the two programs, the approach of the training is quite different. While PRINCE2® goes with a process-based approach, Project Management training focuses on developing the knowledge required for leading projects to their success. Therefore, Project Management training focuses more on answering the “how” aspect of a project.
Since PRINCE2® has a process-based approach, the content focuses on best practices and relies on defining the roles of individuals. Project Management training on the contrary focuses more on knowledge areas rather than practices. It trains professionals in a broader sense in areas such as risk management, cost-cutting, time management etc. so that they are able to lead projects effectively.
Project Management training has recognition in India and throughout the world. PRINCE2®, though recognized in most nations, has more weightage in the UK and European nations.
The eligibility of the two programs is different. Project management training requires participants to have a minimum work experience of 2 years. PRINCE2® foundation certification does not require any work experience. The practitioner level PRINCE2® certification requires the participant to have completed the foundation course.
Project management training powers professionals to have bigger dreams and realize them. The training can give them a boost in their career in terms of salary and taking up new responsibilities.
The training is applicable for most of the domains and the methodologies are good for both short-term and long-term projects. The certification is recognized in most of the industries wherever project management is used. Since the participants are trained in core concepts of communication, management, resource planning, risk mitigation etc. they turn out to become valuable assets to the organizations in the longer run.
